Transition Instructions
Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Happy Cat!
By Antoninus on Nov 23, 2021
Momma bought this food for me, along with the canned variety, because I had struvite crystals in my bladder. Momma thought I wouldn't eat it because there's no tuna in the ingredients. I've done hunger strikes when Momma took my tuna away in the past. The vet told Momma that tuna's the worst offender for struvite crystals, meaning, vulnerable cats like me need to keep tuna out of our diets. The vet gave Momma food samples, and this one smelled so good, even without tuna, that I ate it. My household cat buddies also like my prescription food and try to steal a few chomps when I'm not looking. However, it's not good for them because it changes the urine pH, and that could be harmful for cats who Momma bought this food for me, along with the canned variety, because I had struvite crystals in my bladder. After ten days of eating this food, the vet took a urine sample from me and said my struvite crystals were all gone! I have since been weaned off pain meds, and I feel great. I've even gained a little weight. Momma's not sure if I'll need to continue eating this special food forever, but I hope so, because it's so yummy, and that makes me a happy cat! … more

ONLY KIDNEY FOOD THE KITTY LOVES!!!
By Nettie on Nov 7, 2021
We've tried 3 diff. kidney diets for our 3 yr. old cat, this is the only 1 he will eat, and he seems to really love it! Out of all the dry kidney diets, this one seems to be the best for our cat, anyway. We really were afraid he was going to refuse it, but he went right for it! Our other cats cannot have it, so they get separate dishes of their food in diff. rooms. A+ for this dry food for kidney patients!!!

A wonderful thing.
By Animallover on Nov 5, 2021
My cat passed and I still had his new veterinary prescribed cat food. Chewy refunded me and told me to donate the food to an animal shelter. It was a very wonderful and unexpected situation. So I am going to make sure it goes to a good use. Thank you chewy.com for making me smile.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets UR St/Ox Urinary Formula Dry Cat Food
By JAGG on Oct 24, 2021
My cat has been on this food before. It helped cure the crystals that were in his urine. He was crystal free for about 3 years and was on regular cat food that was grain free. However, the crystals returned so he is back on this food. He is an inside cat and hyper and there are other animals that come into our yard.

Keeps my Sophie healthy
By Petra on Sep 14, 2021
My Sophie (age 9) started to get an UTI infection yearly when she was about 5 years old. Lots of pain and suffering, vet visits, medications. My vet then prescribed this food and she loves the taste of it and for the past 4 years did not get an infection. It is pricy but well worth every penny for keeping her healthy and pain free. I'd rather spend the money on this food than a yearly high vet bill. I just wish it would not require a prescription because it is a hazzle to get from my vet. Thank goodness Chewy is very helpful and consistant to contact the vet.

Just add water--Cured Bladder Stones
By MrsNeuby on Aug 23, 2021
My cat was diagnosed with bladder stones after he started urinating outside the litter box, grooming himself a lot after urinating, and having blood in his urine. Extra moisture/water was recommended by the vet to help flush the stones as well as this special diet. The price per serving was higher for the wet food, so I did the next best thing. I got the dry food and added warm water! He is 14 lbs so twice a day I give him 1/3 cup food plus 3/4 cup warm water. He loves it! Drinks all the water, tries to bury the food, then comes back a few minutes later to eat it all gone. We went back 11 days later and the vet did a urinalysis and his stones were cleared!! bad batch from Purina?
By scorch on Sep 22, 2021
not sure exactly what the issue is, but only one of my cats is eating from this most recent bag. The other's will have a few bites but end up having no interest in eating. I have already updated my autoship to switch brands back to one I know they will like. Maybe it is just a bad batch? Something the cats know and I dont I guess. But, I cant let them go on not eating full meals.

Cat wont eat it
By Food on Oct 9, 2021 top50Contributor
Tried this brand of food for our kitty with crystals since he pukes up on hills C/D and refuses to eat royal SO anymore. He wont eat this at all either. Other than certain wet food, i feel I've run out of dry food options for him to eat.
